Chapter Six

"You knew before we got to the hotel there was a 1920s-themed Christmas dance," Dolores said, eying Zia's dress.

"Why do you think I suggested we get some flapper-styled dresses?" Zia strapped on her dress shoes, low-heeled. She was tall enough as it was, a good six inches over Dolores, who was petite at best.

"You were getting a jump on Halloween next year?"

Zia laughed. "Even I don't like Halloween that much."

"Uh-huh." Dolores draped her arms around Zia, kissing her cheek. Zia liked Halloween that much and more. "Is Kane dressing up?"

"He has a fedora. Men's suits don't change all that much, lucky bastards."

"This should be fun, unless, of course, possessed snowmen, little-boy ghosts, overly enthusiastic teenagers, or crazy old ladies interfere."

Zia grinned, wiggling out of Dolores's embrace. She walked into the bathroom to double-check her makeup. Hmmm. Maybe I'm more vain than I thought, she mused. "As to that, Kane has already promised Joanne several dances."

Dolores peered around the doorframe. "Really?"

"It's her hundred-and-third Christmas. She probably won't get many more, I can't imagine." Zia painted her lips in a glittery ruby. "It made her smile so much."

"It's sweet," Dolores agreed, digging in her makeup bag, coming up with a plum lipstick that would go well with her golden dress, which sported one layer of fringe after another. Zia wanted to kiss it right off her the moment Dolores had applied it. "And it will give you and I many more dances together."

Zia took her hand, squeezing it. They had a good sense of the other patrons, comfortable none of the other guests had a problem with their sexuality. That alone made them feel free to be themselves, hating it needed to be a concern in the first place. "It'll be grand."

Dolores gave a little twirl so that she could see the fringe on the bottom of her silver-and-blue flapper dress whirl in the mirror. "I kinda of love this look." Zia touched the gem-encrusted headband she'd bought for the outfit. Maybe she would wear this for Halloween next year.

"It does look good on you." Dolores gave her own reflection the stink eye. "I'm too short. I'm not sure I'm pulling this off."

"I like it. You look lovely. We need to corral Kane, if he hasn't already deserted us."

"I'm still in the living room," he called.

"Good. Picture time," Dolores replied.

She pulled Zia out into the living room, and they took their selfies before heading down to the party. The music was from a DJ who bore a resemblance to Charlaine. This far into the middle of nowhere, Zia hadn't been expecting a live band, but it would have been fun. The little kids were already dancing with the wild abandon usually only found in children. She couldn't remember a time when she didn't worry about her own dancing. She had many skills; dancing wasn't among them. Dolores could dance. Zia had no idea about Kane. Getting to dances wasn't something that happened often in their line of work unless something had infested a nightclub.
